Living Free
Once you learn to fight with the Sword of the Spirit, you must stay free.  Here is the practical path to remaining in the freedom you have come to.

  • Be in connection with God on a daily basis through your Daily Time Alone With God so He can tell you ahead of time what you may encounter, or steer you to truth you need to know when temptation comes.  Above all, you will be building your relationship with Him during this time.
  • Be in tune with the Holy Spirit throughout your day so He can point out a sin or stronghold to you.  Carry your morning worship time with you into your day.  Make the effort to turn your mind to God as often throughout your day as possible until it becomes a habit.  If you have to, set alarms, or let certain activities be reminders to connect with God.  Practice being aware of His presence.
  • Learn to recognize whether a thought or emotion is from God or from Satan.
    • If it is a lie from Satan, learn to recognize how the lie is coming to you and what circumstances or situations generate this lie in your mind. If possible, avoid these circumstances or situations.  In any case, use the Sword of the Spirit to do battle.
    • If the thought is from God, obey, or receive whatever He chooses to give you at that moment (comfort, joy, guidance, etc.).
  • Confess, Repent, and deal with any sin or stronghold as soon as God makes you aware of it.  Keep a clear channel between you and God. Use the checklist in Lesson 3 to remind you what sin is.  Also ask God what you need to confess -- and then listen.
    • Is there any unforgiveness in your heart that would block God from acting in your behalf?  Confess and Repent of this as well -- and forgive.

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matt 6:14-15.

    • Recognize that buying into Satan’s lie is sin.  Don’t call it anything else.
    • Choose to cast this sin or stronghold away from you; do it verbally and out loud; your mind must hear this decision

Ezek 18:31-32 Context: God’s pleading for Israel to turn back to Him, and discussion of individual punishment -- “Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.”

    • Ask God to be delivered from this evil.

“And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”  Matt 6:13.

  • Find Bible truth to replace the lie; do not allow your house to stand empty.

"When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says,`I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation." Matt 12:43-45.

  • Bible truth must be repeated over and over.  The mind learns what is important by repetition.  You must continuously put God’s truth into your mind until the temptation goes away.  This can take seconds, or weeks, or anything in between, depending on how strongly this particular sin is entrenched in you.  But don’t give up -- persist!
  • Make a battle plan
    • Satan will not give up easily but will come and attack again in this same area.  Each time he does, his attack will be weaker and shorter provided you are victorious and do not give in.  so be ready.  Be watchful.  Stay in tune with the holy Spirit who can alert you to an imminent attack.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.  Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”  1 Pet 5:8,9.

    • You may need to avoid certain places, people, or activities.
    • Certainly you will want to hold onto the Bible truths you used to initially break free, adding any verses God has given you since then.
  • As you continue to win victories in this area, Satan will have less and less power over you here, and eventually the temptation will become a whisper.  At this point, make sure you don’t buy into the “It won’t hurt to do this just once again” lie.  As soon as the temptation comes, run to Jesus.  Whip out your verses.  Pray!  But above all, don’t give in!
